'The Cooking Priest' Comes to Seton Hall

The Department of Catholic Studies at is pleased to invite our community to the Second Annual Monsignor James Cafone Memorial Lecture, featuring Father Leo Patalinghug on Tue Tuesday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Bishop Dougherty University Center - Registration is strongly encouraged.
About the lecture
Father Leo will cook and discuss the philosophy of Grace Before Meals, which is a
movement to bring families back to the dinner table - away from work, school, TV,
games, and many other distractions - to share a delicious meal together, communicate
and love one another and be nourished body, mind, and soul. How? With easy lessons,
tasty recipes and reasons to come together and share in the love that only a family
or friend can provide.
Father Leo will also do a book signing after the presentation; his cookbooks, Grace Before Meals and Spicing Up Married Life, and his most recent book, Epic Food Fight, will be available for purchase at the event. What better way to honor Msgr. Cafone than by combining his desire to share his love of the Church and Catholic mission of the University, with his joy in bringing people together through sharing their time, conversation and good food.
Monsignor Cafone served as a member of the University’s Board of Regents and Trustees since 2005 and was a faculty member and administrator for 43 years. He had a special interest in the spirituality of food and was the focus of a Star-Ledger article back in 1998, in which he also shared some of his favorite recipes.

About the Speaker
Father Leo Patalinghug is a priest member of a community of consecrated life, Voluntas
Dei (The Will of God). Fr. Leo is also the founder, host, and director of Grace Before
Meals, an international apostolate to help strengthen families and relationship through
God's gift of a family-cooked meal. He has appeared on PBS, ABC, CBS and The Food
Network, where he defeated a world famous chef in "Throwdown with Bobby Flay."
Established in 2012-- the Year of Faith and the 50th anniversary of the opening of
Vatican II -- the Department of Catholic Studies at Seton Hall University, America's
oldest diocesan university, fosters Seton Hall's Catholic identity and mission by
exploring the relationship of Catholicism with all areas of culture and learning.
Since its focus is the Church's encounter and dialogue with society or the Church
in the world, Vatican II designated a special place for Catholic Studies as a discipline
in academic life. As a result, Catholic Studies is a dialogue between Catholicism
and culture that occurs in a special way at Catholic universities. While respecting
other disciplines, Catholic Studies explores theology and philosophy in relation to
culture, humankind and the world. This methodological approach opens up a place for
all other disciplines; these enrich Catholic Studies and are enriched in return.
