Alumni Spotlight: Fredrik Nilsson

In the field of international security analysis, one alumnus stands out for his remarkable journey from software sales to the School of Diplomacy and International Relations and on to becoming an intelligence analyst. Meet Fredrik Nilsson, a UC Irvine alumnus who found his passion for global issues through a career change that led him to Seton Hall where he focused on foreign policy analysis and international security.

Nilsson’s story is one of adaptability and determination. Originally from Sweden but raised in the Bay Area, his academic journey began with a deep fascination for history and global affairs. After earning a bachelor’s degree in international studies, Nilsson ventured into the fast-paced world of software sales during San Francisco's tech boom. Then, faced with the unpredictability of the pandemic-induced layoffs, he reassessed his career trajectory and pivoted to international security. Under the guidance of Seton Hall faculty and through immersive experiences he took advantage of during graduate school, Nilsson strengthened his analytical skills and developed a better understanding of the world and geopolitics.

Leveraging internships and networking opportunities, Nilsson gained an edge within the competitive landscape of global security analysis. An internship at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, which he secured with help from the staff at School of Diplomacy, gave him practical insights into research, risk assessment, and international security dynamics that are helping him in his current work.

Today, Nilsson serves as a consultant at Control Risks, working with a large enterprise software company in the Bay Area. His multifaceted responsibilities include analyzing emerging threats and trends worldwide and providing insights to enhance his client’s security planning and operational stability. Nilsson attributes much of his professional success to the rigorous training and mentorship he received at Seton Hall. The program's emphasis on critical thinking, strategic analysis, and effective communication equipped him with the essential skills needed to succeed professionally.

Reflecting on his journey, Nilsson offers advice for aspiring professionals studying international relations and navigating the global security landscape.
