Environmental Health and Safety - EH&S
Seton Hall’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) programs aim at safeguarding
the well-being of the University’s employees and students and protecting the ecosystems
of our campuses and the surrounding communities where we operate. EH&S management
practices prevent injuries and illnesses and ensure regulatory compliance at the Federal
(OSHA, EPA) and State (NJDEP) levels. The proactive system also incorporates industrial
hygiene elements that anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control potential workplace
hazards.

Responsible Conduct on Research – RCR
Responsible conduct of research (RCR) is defined as "the practice of scientific investigation with integrity." It involves the awareness
and application of established professional norms and ethical principles in the performance
of all activities related to scientific research.
Institutional Review Board – IRB
IRB is established to review and approve research involving human subjects. The purpose of the IRB is to ensure
that all human subject research be conducted in accordance with all federal, institutional,

Biosafety – Institutional Biosafety Committee – IBC
Biosafety is safety with respect to the effects of biological research on humans and
the environment.
Institutional Animal Care Use Committee – (IACUC)
Every institution that uses animals for federally funded laboratory research must
have an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The role of the IACUC
is to ensure the ethical and sensitive care and use of animals in research, teaching

Export Control in Research
Export control laws (ECLs) represent a comprehensive set of federal regulations that control and
restrict the release of critical technologies, technical data, software code, equipment,
chemical and biological materials, and other materials, information, and services
to foreign nationals or foreign countries.
Conflict of Interest – (COI)
A conflict of interest (COI) is a situation in which a person or organization is involved in multiple interests,
financial interest, or otherwise, one of which could possibly corrupt the motivation
of the individual or organization. The presence of a conflict of interest is independent of the occurrence of impropriety.

Misconduct on Research
Research misconduct is defined as fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism in proposing, performing,
or reviewing research, or in reporting research results. Fabrication is making up data or results and recording or reporting them.
