Executive Doctorate in Education (Executive Ed.D.)

K-12 School Administration

The Executive Doctorate in Education, a program designed for working professionals with leadership experience, prepares scholarly practitioners to improve education for diverse students and stakeholders. The program develops equity- and justice-based leaders to plan and enact meaningful change across settings. Faculty members emphasize the intersections of theory, policy, and practice and encourage students to apply learning across contexts to solve complex educational issues. Seton Hall University, as a Catholic, research-focused institution, has a long standing reputation for creating transformative leaders. Graduates have pursued careers as school, district, community, and state leaders.

The Program

The Executive Ed.D. is a cohort-based, accelerated program that includes a creative mixture of hybrid and online learning. Students may complete the 54-credit program in two and a half to three years. The cohort model allows students, working with distinguished faculty and leaders, to develop a learning community and create lasting professional networks. During coursework, a faculty advisor guides the cohort. During the dissertation process, dissertation mentors provide individualized support to students. The program is designed to meet the needs of working professionals. In-person courses occur on Saturdays and Sundays during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. The course sequence incorporates thoughtful combinations of hybrid and online modalities to respect students’ busy schedules and support quality teaching and learning.

Designed for busy school leaders, this program provides a rich perspective on education leadership in a supportive, flexible cohort setting.

Who Should Apply 

Candidates include working professionals with leadership experience. 

Admissions Requirements 

  • Online Application
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended, including an earned master’s degree in an appropriate field 
  • Resume of professional background 
  • Statement of professional and personal goals 
  • Three (3) letters of recommendation regarding candidate's potential for doctoral study 

To complete the process, candidates will conduct an admissions interview with a faculty member. 

Application Deadlines 

The application deadline is August 1st; however, due to cohort size limitations, please submit your application early. Orientation occurs at the end of August and classes begin in September.

Faculty

The faculty in the College of Human Development, Culture, and Media are expert researchers and practitioners in teacher and leader preparation as well as professional psychology and family therapy. Many are actively engaged with schools and community agencies, modeling best practices to their students in the university classroom and in the field. Collaboration within departments and across is encouraged with the recognition that supporting and improving the lives of children, families and communities is a complex process.
